Team connection is a community of athletes, coaches, and fans who believe passionately that sports fuels life. Founded over 20 years ago by a coach with a lifelong love of sports, Team Connection aims to infuse awesomeness in every interaction with customers, competitors, and enthusiasts. We want to provide the right athletic apparel, spirit wear, and equipment so you can play your very best. Team Connection specializes in selling high-end sportswear for branded and customized for teams.

The Challenge

Needing a stable system which could handle both traffic and the unique workflow required for the Team Connection project, we set out to create a custom solution which would fit all of the unique needs that Team Connection had. Their needs and issues were split into 3 different areas. The first needing a solution that would be able to cater to their B2C customers, and give a fluent ordering experience to those buying ready-made items directly on the website. The second need was to create a gateway and custom B2B platform to sell directly to coaches with a special discount to registered and genuine coaches. The third challenge of the project was the ability to create “on the fly” domains and stores (dynamic store builder), for coaches that wanted to set up custom stores for their team. All of these stores were required to connect to their inventory system and create a seamless portal between the website solutions and their in-house legacy inventory system.

The Approach

Given the requirements of the project were more advanced than a typical client, a large amount of effort and energy was given to mapping out the requirements and the design of the B2B site, B2C site, and custom site builder. As soon as the requirements were clearly understood, and input was given from all of the team members of Team Connection, to incorporate all the business challenges into one integrated solution.  We then translated all requests and determined the best technology for Team Connections needs. We took a lot of ideas, and input and helped turn them into reality. Along the development of the project, an agile approach helped keep us flexible enough to take suggestions such as creating a bulk upload for B2B orders, through excel. This flexible approach gave Team Connection the ability to tweak and requests both custom changes and integrations on the website.

Dynamic Store Builder
Dynamic Store Builder

One of the biggest challenges of Team Connection was the Dynamic Store Builder which would allow a coach to create a dynamic website on the fly. This would give a coach the ability to create their own custom website at the click of a button. We built this functionality with the ability to manage all website catalog, products, orders, customer data, reports and content for all your stores from one central dashboard. Additionally, the ability to add products and bundles to multiple categories, share inventory across multiple online stores and update product info and pricing from one database. Or in more simpler terms if 100 team stores were created it could all be managed from one central location through advanced inventory management.

Needing a way to put team information such as team member numbers, logos of the team, and other customizations, we created a custom configurator for Team Connection. The customizer also included the ability to calculate price changes instantly. The price changes in real-time as elements are added or removed, giving users full transparency to any product’s cost. Allowing Team Connection customers to see instantly the difference in price between an embroidered or a screen printed team logo.

One of the main methods of revenue for Team Connection was through the creation of their print catalogs and although effective at generating sales the process for creating each catalog was both cumbersome and time-consuming.

Team Connection required a method and ability to manage products across sites, channels, and locations with master catalogs. Our solution streamlines your eCommerce inventory and catalog management, making it easy to manage multiple catalogs so Team Connection was able to focus on driving sales. Additionally, the catalog allowed for easy sharing and updating products in real time across all catalog, as well as global product properties shared across all catalogs from a single dashboard. This allowed Team Connection to create a curated collection of catalogs both electronic and print almost instantaneously.

Customization, B2B sales, and catalog-driven leads is a large generation of Team Connection sales however they wanted to create a B2C e-commerce site that would generate sales directly to customers. To achieve this goal everything we did from initial research and analysis to web design and development, to support and maintenance is geared towards maximizing Team Connection’s success. As a result, the value we provided to Team Connection included increased ROI, revenue, cost per acquisition/sale, lifetime customer value, and various other business-specific KPIs.

The Result

This project has become the next stage of our business it’s helped make our processes better-defined and allowed us to reach a wider audience. It's a fairly in-depth, multitasking type of system where we've tried to create many, many layers of automation so the user interface is one that doesn't require a lot of human intervention – we want the system to know what to do - there are rules built into it. From that standpoint, I think it's fairly complicated. It has processes that happen very quickly that are automatic and seamless.

The finalization of the project has allowed Team Connection to go from a very catalog and analog driven system to a system that is automated and electronic. Customers have the ability to place orders through the website, which has saved a large amount of time on customer service and has given customer service the freedom to be more proactive in sales. This alone has had a drastic increase in the revenue of the company. The system itself is a fairly in-depth, multitasking type of system where we've tried to create many, many layers of automation so the user interface is one that doesn't require a lot of human intervention. This has given Team Connection to explore new revenue paths as well as decrease staff and increase profitability. The system allows business, customization, and ordering processes to happen both automatically and seamlessly. Working with this client has allowed us to create an intuitive understanding of what the best next actions are to grow revenue.
